Plotsummary
The story begins in the mid-18th century among the Indian tribes of what is now northern Colorado. A young Arapaho boy named Lame Beavergrows up and becomes a great warrior after a single handed raid ona local tribe brings horses to the tribe for the first timeenabling the Arapaho to become part of the great plains horse culture. Bythe end of the 18th century, Lame Beaver's band is camped along theSouthPlatte River and encounter white trappers for thefirst time. The tribe has discovered gold in the streams of northern Colorado, but notknowing the value that whites place on it, they consider it littlemore than a curiosity.
Pasquinel (RobertConrad) is a French Canadianfur traderwho has gone out to the Rocky Mountains to trade for beaver pelts. The beaver peltsthat he acquired from the Arapaho and his remaining trade goods arestolen when he is attacked by members of the Pawnee and he is later left for dead in a fightwith river pirates. Pasquinel manages to return to Saint Louis withan arrow in his spine. Without money, he is introduced by a surgeonto Herman Bockweiss (Raymond Burr), a Bavarian immigrant merchant and silversmith, and goes to him looking for backing. Pasquinel later marriesBockweiss's daughter Lise (Sally Kellerman) to gain the merchant'sgood graces. His financing now secured, Pasquinel heads west andmeets up with Alexander McKeag (Richard Chamberlain), a Scottish-born trappercaptured by the Pawnee. After Pasquinel saves McKeag's life, thetwo agree to become partners.
Pasquinel and McKeag return to Lame Beaver's village. Sensing anopportunity both to further his trapping career and to get at thegold, Pasquinel marries Lame Beaver's daughter, Clay Basket (BarbaraCarrera), despite the fact that McKeag has fallen in love withher and Pasquinel already has a wife in St.Louis. Clay Basket is not enthusiastic about the match, andloves McKeag, but honors Lame Beaver's direction to marry Pasquineland remains devoted to her new husband. To Pasquinel, however, therelationship is little more than a marriage of convenience. Hefathers two sons, Jacques (or 'Jake') (Stephen McHattie) and Marcel(or 'Mike') (Kario Salem), but spends little time with his familyas he is often away trapping, hunting for gold, or in St. Louis. Healso continues his double life as he fathers a daughter to Lise inSt. Louis.
McKeag breaks his partnership with Pasquinel due to his love forClay Basket, and the disappointment with Pasquinel's doublelife—including the rumors of Pasquinel has other wives in Montreal,Detroit, and New Orleans. Jacques, now a teenager, tries to killMcKeag, and this causes the final break between Pasquinel andMcKeag. They are reunited years later at a rendezvous of mountain men (based on a real event).
When Pasquinel is killed shortly after discovering the gold veinhe has long sought, McKeag takes in Clay Basket and becomes a sutler at a frontier fort. Headopts Pasquinel and Clay Basket's infant daughter Lucinda(Cristina Raines), but the two Pasquinel brothers prove to be wildand unmanageable and soon go off on their own way. They eventuallybecome tribal leaders.
In 1845, Levi Zendt (Gregory Harrison) is the son of a wealthyMennonite farmer in Lancaster County,Pennsylvania. While taking a local girl out to deliver food tothe orphanage, the couple kiss. When they are discovered, the girlclaims that Zendt forced himself on her and Zendt stands accused ofsexualassault. Zendt is shunned by his family and his fellowMennonites.
Zendt decides to flee Pennsylvania for the Oregon country and purchases a Conestogawagon. Before he leaves, he goes to the local orphanage and picks up EllyZahm (Stephanie Zimbalist), a teenage orphan who has always beensmitten with Zendt. Elly has witnessed the 'assault' and is one ofthe few people in the county who believes that Zendt is innocent. The two marry and head west.
Making their way to St. Louis overland and by steamboat, theyjoin a wagon trainheading for the Oregon country, guided by the unsavory Sam Purchas(Donald Pleasance). In St. Louis they meet English writer OliverSeccombe (Timothy Dalton) and Army Captain Maxwell Mercy (ChadEverett). Seccombe is a romantic looking for adventure. Mercy is anarmy negotiator sent to forge treaties with the tribes of the west.He is well meaning but underestimates the demand Americans have forwestern lands and the animosity the plains tribes have for allwhites. Mercy is married to Lisette, Pasquinel's daughter in St.Louis, and unsuccessfully tries to use this relationship to try togain the Pasquinel brothers' favor.
After stopping at the fort and meeting McKeag, the Zendtscontinue into the Rocky Mountains. When the guide, SamPurchas, tries to rape Elly, they decide to turn back. They returnto the fort defeated. McKeag offers to partner with the Zendts in atrading post near the South Platte River that had been the primarysite of the Arapaho village of Lame Beaver. Elly also realizes thatshe has become pregnant. They agree to stay and settle, but beforethey can reach the site Elly is bitten by a rattlesnake and dies.
Devastated by his wife's death, Zendt heads into the mountainsand lives alone as a hermit in the cabin once occupied by McKeag.Lucinda McKeag, now a grown woman, takes pity on Zendt and goes tohis cabin to nurse him back to health. The couple begin a romanticrelationship and return to McKeag's trading post. Zendt marriesLucinda and takes over the trading post when McKeag dies.
Hans Brumbaugh (Alex Karras), a Wolgadeutscheimmigrant seeking his fortune, passes through the trading post. While panning in a stream near Zendt's trading post, he rediscoversthe gold vein that Pasquinel found before he died. To defend hisclaim, however, Brumbaugh kills a fellow prospector. He becomes sodistraught about the killing that he leaves the claim withouttaking any of the gold. Returning to Zendt's trading post, hepurchases land and becomes a farmer. By using irrigation, he turns marginal land into richcropland and becomes such a success he is given the nickname of 'PotatoBrumbaugh.' He later switches to sugar beets and becomeswealthy when he opens a food processing plant.
By this time, the Civil War has broken out in the eastand the Indian tribes take advantage of the lack of a strongmilitary presence in the territory to commence raids on whitesettlements, redressing past grievances. The tribes are led by thePasquinel brothers.
A recent Colorado settler named Frank Skimmerhorn (RichardCrenna) forms a volunteer militia to deal with the tribes. Skimmerhorn, asurvivor of tribal wars in Minnesota, has apathological hatred of all native Americans. He leads an attack ona group of peaceful Indians, ordering a slaughter of everyone inthe camp including women and children. Captain John McIntosh (MarkHarmon), a young officer under Skimmerhorn's command, refuses tojoin in the massacre and is court martialed. Atthe trial, graphic testimony from a young soldier turns public opinionagainst Skimmerhorn. However, by manipulating the facts,Skimmerhorn is able to regain favor with the people, culminatingwith his capture and summary execution of Jake Pasquinel.Seeing no hope, Mike Pasquinel is convinced by the Zendts tosurrender to the Regular Army in Denver where, in theory at least, he willreceive a fair trial. As they are marching to the Army's commandheadquarters waving white flags, Skimmerhorn (who is giving aninterview to a local newspaper editor) shoots Mike in the back, killing him in coldblood. Public opinion is then firmly turned againstSkimmerhorn. Maxwell Mercy, outraged at his brothers-in law'smurders, challenges Skimmerhorn to a duel and nearly kills him, only to be stopped byLevi Zendt. Disgraced and rejected by his son John, Skimmerhornleaves Colorado in disgrace.[2]
Oliver Seccombe returns to the area as an agent of severalBritish investors who want to start a cattle ranch. By claiming watering holes underthe HomesteadAct and utilizing the open range, they can monopolize thousandsof square miles with a very small investment. The ranch wouldeventually control nearly six million acres (9,300 square miles or24,000 km²), an area nearly the size of Vermont.
They hire John Skimmerhorn (Cliff De Young), son of thedisgraced militia colonel, to acquire longhorn cattle in Texas and drive them toColorado. For the cattle drive, the young Skimmerhorn hires severalcowboys, including theexperienced cow hand R.J. Poteet (Dennis Weaver) and young JimLloyd (played by Michael LeClair as a teen during the cattle-driveepisode, and William Atherton as the older Lloyd). At first Skimmerhorn encounters resistance because of his father'sactions with the Indians, but he distances himself from hisfather's shadow and quickly earns the respect of the cowhands. Theepic cattle drive across the tractless Llano Estacado is successful and the newranch, named Venneford, becomes one of the largest ranches in thewest. In 1876, Colorado becomes a state and the small communitythat has grown up around Zendt's trading post is renamed'Centennial' in honor of the American centennial.
Seccombe stays on to manage the ranch and Jim Lloyd becomes aregular hand at the ranch. Lloyd falls in love with Levi Zendt'sbeautiful but wild daughter, Clemma (Adrienne Larussa). Clemma, however, merely toys with Jim. Charlotte Buckland (Lynn Redgrave),the daughter of one of Venneford's wealthy British investors, comesto Colorado to find adventure. Clemma leaves town, leaving Jimheartbroken. Charlotte falls in love with Seccombe and the two aremarried.
A range war developsbetween the cattle ranchers led by the Venneford cowboys, farmersled by Hans Brumbaugh, and sheep herders led by new settler,Messmore Garrett (Clint Ritchie). New town sheriff Axel Dumire(Brian Keith) tries to settle the conflict peacefully but it soonescalates into violence.
Mervin Wendell (Anthony Zerbe), his wife Maude (Lois Nettleton),and young son Philip (Doug McKeon) come to town. The Wendells areostensibly itinerate actors but in reality they are charlatans and con-artistsworking their way across the new railroad towns one step ahead ofthe law. Their favorite con is called the 'badger game'. The con works on the localpastor and the Wendells reap large blackmail proceeds. Their plan turns sourwhen they try it on a worldwise businessman, SorenSorenson (Sandy McPeak). He recognizes their trick, too late, andthreatens to expose them. Wendell attacks him, the two struggle andSorenson is killed by Maude Wendell. While looking through hisbelongings, they find a large fortune in cash that Sorenson wasgoing to use to finance a real estate purchase. They keep the moneyand Philip hides the body in a subterranean cave along theriverbank.
Sheriff Dumire has suspected the Wendells of shady activitiessince their arrival and questions them about the missingbusinessman. The Wendells won't crack, and without a body, the sheriff can donothing. The Wendells' young son, Philip, admires the sheriff andhas no respect for his father. He wants to tell him the truth butcannot bring himself to betray his own flesh and blood. The sheriffis soon killed by remnants of the gang hired to drive the farmersout in the range war, and Philip begins to reveal the secret onlyas Dumire dies. The Wendells parlay their stolen fortune into alocal real estateempire.
Seccombe proves to be a poor businessman with somewhatquestionable morals and the finances of the ranch are soon calledinto question by the Venneford's British investors. They dispatchFinlay Perkin (Clive Revill), a dour Scottish accountant, to audit Venneford's books. While there, a terribleblizzard hits the regionkilling many of the ranch's cattle. Levi Zendt dies in an accident, leaving Lucinda, and their two grown children, Clemma and Martin.Perkin becomes convinced Seccombe is skimming money from the ranch. The fraud accusations and thelarge loss of cattle, combine to take a toll on Seccombe's health. In despair Seccombe kills himself leaving Charlotte a widow.
Charlotte travels to England briefly, but returns to Vennefordafter inheriting a majority interest in the ranch. She falls inlove with ranch foreman Jim Lloyd, but their romance begins to fallapart when Clemma Zendt returns. Jim breaks off his engagement withCharlotte. Charlotte goes to Clemma and convinces her to leavetown—or she will use all her resources to expose Clemma'sactivities in her time away, which include alcoholism, rumors of prostitution and aterm in prison. Clemma gets on the next train to Chicago, and Jimand Charlotte wed.
By the turn of the 20th century, Mervin Wendell has grownwealthy selling marginal land to naive immigrants and easternersfor drylandfarming, then lending on the land at extortion rates then foreclosing andreselling the land at a profit. Though the secret of his family'ssuccess still haunts Philip, he continues the family real estatebusiness often mercilessly foreclosing on unsuccessful farmers.Among those are young Iowans Earland Alice Grebe. Despite warnings from Hans Brumbaugh and JimLloyd, the Grebes settle on the drylands and take out a mortgagewith Mervin Wendell. The marginal land soon turns disastrous as theDust Bowl years of the1920s and 1930s set in. Dust storms kill the Grebe's son and causeAlice to go insane.
The shrinking of the prairie and the closing of the open range leaveVenneford Ranch a shadow of its former glory. Still, the ranch islarge and successful and Charlotte, again a widow, uses her wealthand clout to defend Hispanic victims of local bigotry.
By the 1970s, the two leading citizens in town are Paul Garrett(David Janssen), the current owner of Venneford Ranch, and MorganWendell (Robert Vaughn). Both men are in their 50s, but anysimilarity ends there. Garrett is thoughtful, introspective, andinterested in preserving the natural beauty of Colorado for futuregenerations. He is Charlotte and Jim Lloyd's grandson and alsodescendant of the Garretts, Levi Zendt, and Pasquinel. Wendell isPhilip's son who has inherited the family real estate empire aswell as their propensity for self interest. He is a nakedopportunist looking to advance his own personal and financialinterests at any cost.
ALTERNATIVE VIEW: the presentation of Garrett and Wendell wasinformed by mid-1970s politics, specifically the risingenvironmental movement. However, today's approach to these issuesis more nuanced, and Paul Garrett as portrayed often comes off aspedantic, cranky, and intolerant...and his continued defense of thecattle industry doesn't mesh with modern-day ecologicalsensibilities. Morgan Wendell, while made to be callous andcalculating, nonetheless demonstrated a better understanding of howto work with business interests and keep an eye on the future. Itshould be noted that on the election night, Garrett got bitterlydrunk, not a good sign for someone who is asking for the publictrust.
Professor Lew Vernor (Andy Griffith) and writer Sidney Enderman(Sharon Gless) arrive in town to do research on the history ofCentennial. Vernor goes to Paul Garrett to learn the history of theregion. Later while exploring the town Vernor discovers awashed-out cave with human remains on the Wendell's property.Morgan, recognizing the scene from his father's tales, ordersVernor out and hides the evidence of the century-old murder thatmade his family wealthy.
Wendell is a candidate for the new statewide office ofCommissioner of Resources, an elected office that will balanceeconomic growth with environmental and historical preservation.Wendell is running on a platform that emphasizes economic growth.Paul Garrett and other civic leaders hope for a more balancedapproach that preserves the traditional Colorado way of life. Whiletelling Vernor and Enderman the history of Centennial (Garrett'svoice narrates the miniseries), he is persuaded to run againstWendell in the election.
During the election, Wendell runs a dirty campaign and smearsGarrett by any means possible. He plays the race card, pointing out the widower Garrettplans to marry a young Hispanic woman. In the end, Garrett appears towin the election (though the final outcome is never actuallyrevealed). Professor Vernor and Sidney Enderman write the historyof Centennial.
Locationand filming
The novel places the town at the junction of the South PlatteRiver and the Cache la PoudreRiver which would place it roughly halfway between the Coloradotowns of Greeley and Kersey. Thisis consistent with Michener's description of the town's location;[1] however no realtown exists in this area. This location would place the spot of thefictional town in central Weld County on the High Plains about25 miles (40 km) east of the base of the Rockies. AuthorJames A. Michener lived in Greeley during the late 1930s and wasfamiliar with the area. Michener used a variety of source materialfor his fictional town taken from various areas in eastern Coloradoand Centennial is not meant to represent a single settlement. Thereis a city called Centennial, Colorado, but it didnot exist until 2001 and its location and history are not similarto the town described in either the book or miniseries.
Principal filming occurred in 1978. There were numerous filminglocations in several parts of the United States. Colorado filminglocations included Greeley[2], the PawneeNational Grasslands[3], Denver, Central City, Orchard, Bent's Old Fort National Monument and theRocky Mountain NationalPark. Several of the mountain men era scenes were filmed in Grand Teton National Park inWyoming. The scenesrepresenting St. Louis in the late 18th and early 19th century werefilmed in Bracken County, Kentucky. TheWhite Hall StateHistoric Site in Richmond, Kentucky served as theBockweiss mansion. Scenes representing the Zendt farm and LancasterCounty, Pennsylvania were filmed in Ohio.
The ranch house and surrounding buildings used for the VennefordRanch house was the Highlands Ranch Mansion in Highlands Ranch. Years laterthe surrounding property was developed for housing, one of thestreets in the development was named Venneford Ranch Road (by TheMission Viejo Company).
CriticalReception
Nominated for several awards, including a Best Actor Golden Globe for Chamberlain and BestTelevision Series Golden Globe Drama in 1979.[1]It was referred to by some critics as 'the white man's Roots[3], and innarrative style is very similar to the earlier production, coveringseveral generations of a group of families.
Historicalbasis
The character of Colonel Frank Skimmerhorn appears to be looselybased on JohnChivington who led the infamous Sand Creek massacre in Colorado in1864. Captain John McIntosh's role in the incident and subsequenttrial appears to be loosely based on Silas Soule. The range war depicted in thesimilar in many respects to the 1892 Johnson County War in Wyoming. The scene where NatePearson, Bufe Coker, and Fat Laura are murdered by the cattlemen’sposse bears similarities to the lynching of Ellen “Cattle Kate” Watson with the OliverSecombe character taking a role similar to that of Albert JohnBothwell.
Differencesbetween the book and miniseries
Although Michener began his novel in prehistory, the seriesitself begins with elements from Chapter 4 of the book which isentitledThe Many Coups of Lame Beaver. The novel devotesan entire section to Hans Brumbaugh's development of Central Beetcompany however the miniseries makes only passing reference toit.
